Diabetes Services

Legacy's diabetes educators are certified by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCDBE). Our education programs are accredited and meet special quality criteria through the American Association of Diabetes Educators.

Legacy diabetes educators can help you manage your:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Pre-diabetes

Getting started 

At your first appointment, our certified diabetes educators can help you:

  • Assess your current needs and concerns
  • Plan your meals
  • Check your blood sugars
  • Manage your medication
  • Help you get your diabetes back under control, to minimize complications  
  • Start insulin, if needed

Insurance carriers generally require a referral from your primary care doctor. Coverage for these services varies by insurance carrier. Please contact your insurance company for more information.

Next steps

After your first appointment, you may:

  • Continue individual visits to work on your specific concerns, or
  • Enroll in a series of small group classes called Comprehensive Diabetes Self-Management.

Comprehensive diabetes self-management

These small-group classes can help offer support from other patients who may be dealing with the same concerns you have. Topics include: 

  • What is diabetes?
  • Treatment methods
  • How and when to measure blood sugar
  • Meal planning
  • High and low blood sugar
  • How to prevent complications
  • Exercise and fitness
  • How to cope with the stress of diabetes
  • Goal setting for behavior change

Support groups, community programs and research

Legacy sponsors several diabetes support groups. Please call 503-335-3500 for details. 

The Good Samaritan Foundation sponsors on-going fundraising activities in support of diabetes education and research. Legacy is involved in a variety of diabetes-related research projects, some of which are available for patient participation.
