Brain and Spinal Tumor Program
Treatment options for brain cancer and brain and spinal tumors
Brain and spinal cord tumors are growths of abnormal cells in the brain or spinal cord. Tumors that start in the brain are called "primary" brain tumors. A tumor that starts in another part of the body and spreads to the brain is called a "metastatic" brain tumor. Cancers that start in the spine are called central nervous system or CNS cancers.
Brain and spinal cord tumors are not always cancer ("malignant"). Non-cancerous tumors are called "benign."
But, both types of tumors cause symptoms and need care. While benign tumors grow and press into parts of the brain, they rarely spread. Cancerous (malignant) tumors can grow quickly and move into other parts of the brain.
There are many types of brain and spinal cord tumors. They can start in many types of cells and parts of the brain and spinal cord. The signs and symptoms will differ based on where they began, how big they grew, how fast they are growing and how old the patient is.
The chance of recovery (prognosis) will depend on many things such as the patient's age, the size of the tumor and where it is.
