The Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation Program at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel is a special place. For children and adolescents with impairments that make daily functions difficult, we offer not only excellent individual therapy and treatment, but perhaps something that’s even more difficult to find: encouragement and hope. Helping kids achieve independence and develop skills that will be important as they return to their home, school and community is our goal.

We realize this is a difficult time – as difficult as anything you’ve ever faced. You have a tremendous amount of work ahead, but we are here to help, teach and support you in this journey. We consider it a privilege to care for your child. Through our family-focused approach to care, we:

  • Work with you in planning and providing your child’s care
  • Ensure our program will be flexible, accessible and responsive to your family’s needs
  • Practice policies that support the emotional and financial needs of your family
  • Recognize every family has strengths and respect your way of coping with your child’s care, hospital stay and rehabilitation
  • Assist you in meeting with other parents for encouragement and support

A skilled care team that includes you

A child’s rehabilitation needs are much different than an adult’s. Our professionals are licensed, trained and experienced in children’s rehabilitation so you can expect the care your child needs and deserves. In addition to our specialists, we consider you an important part of our team. Our experience shows that family and caregiver participation make a positive difference in a child’s recovery. We welcome your input because we believe that your child is best served by the information you share with us. Together, we are a team focused on the goals of your child and your family.

Meet your care team

Helping you feel at home

Our state-of-the-art facilities are designed to provide healing and comfort for patients and their families. Your child will have a private room that accommodates up to two adults for overnight stays. (Sorry, no one under age 18 is allowed to stay overnight.) Therapies will take place in our dedicated treatment rooms, gyms with a pool for aquatic therapy.

An important part of therapy involves working in spaces that mimic home life so your child can work on rehabilitation skills related to kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and other areas. Most therapy takes place Monday through Saturday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., with Sundays reserved for rest and family time or special rehab needs.

Help and hope at every step of the journey

It’s natural to have concerns about your child’s stay, but you can take comfort knowing that in addition to pediatric expertise, your child’s care team consists of parents and extended family who understand the unique care needs of children and young adults. Our family-oriented team is here to assist so you can focus on the wellbeing of your entire family.

Discharge process

As your child moves to the next phase of recovery, we’ll help you to find resources within our system or with referring facilities, closer to home.

Follow-up care

Being discharged from the Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation program marks an important step in your child’s healing process. Continued support from family, other caregivers, school, friends and medical providers will still be needed. Before discharge, you will receive information from members of the rehab team with recommendations to continue to support your child's recovery. Instructions may include what activities are safe, how to give any medications, and any follow-up medical and therapy appointments to be scheduled.

In most cases, your child's physiatrist (a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist) will have a follow-up visit within 4-6 weeks after discharge, or, if available, a referral will be made to a physiatrist closer to your home. You’ll also want to schedule an appointment with your child's primary care physician to ensure everyone’s working toward the same goals. Follow-up visits to other medical providers who have been or will need to be involved in your child's care will be part of the discharge plan.
