Bariatric surgery fellowship
The Bariatric Surgery Fellowship at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital is one year in length and is for applicants who have completed a residency in general surgery. Begun in 2004, Legacy's bariatric fellowship has one fellow per year, and is fully accredited by the Fellowship Council.
The program has a breadth of training across two different hospitals/practice models and one-on-one experience with faculty. We aim to graduate a fellow who is competent to perform both laparoscopic and robotic bariatric surgery and who is prepared for the independent practice of bariatric surgery. Individual monthly meetings with the Program Director are designed to ready the fellow to undergo the certification process by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
The bariatric fellow rotates at two different hospitals (including Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital and Providence Portland Hospital). The fellow will be exposed to both straightforward and complex patients within these 2 tertiary referral practices. The faculty, with diverse training backgrounds, will expose the fellow to several approaches to each clinical problem.
The fellow will perform many upper endoscopic procedures including preoperative and postoperative screening, pH testing, and interventional procedures.
There are multiple conferences for the fellow’s education. The fellow will direct monthly journal clubs. The Portland Citywide Bariatric Journal Club facilitates healthy debate between bariatric surgeons across the city and state. The fellow will present bariatric cases at monthly at the Legacy Good Samaritan General Surgery M&M conference and will participate in monthly MBSAQIP administrative and quality meetings.
The fellow will lead the surgical team and teach 3rd and 4th year medical students. The fellow will be expected to participate in teaching opportunities during the daily care of surgical patients.
The fellow will complete at least one clinical research project that will be submitted to a national or regional meeting. Legacy provides administrative and research support for completion and presentation of the project.
The fellowship program supports the fellow attending national courses for fellow development.
For current case distribution, please see the Fellowship Council.
