What is BSGI?

Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) is a safe, comfortable imaging technique that can aid in breast cancer diagnosis when a mammogram is inconclusive. This advanced technology is typically used as a non-invasive "next step" when a mammogram shows an area of concern. BSGI is especially useful in early breast cancer detection and can help you avoid a biopsy. Legacy Good Samaritan's Breast Health Center was the first in Oregon to employ this state-of-the-art technology, which is shown to be 96% accurate in determining if cancer is present.

BSGI is especially helpful if you have:

  • Dense breast tissue
  • Areas of concern on a mammogram
  • Lumps that can be felt but not seen with mammography or ultrasound
  • Breast augmentation that interferes with your mammogram
  • Scarring from previous surgeries

What can I expect?

The special camera used for BSGI requires only minimal breast compression. A small amount of a tracing agent is injected into your arm and will concentrate in cancer cells if there are any. BSGI usually takes about 90 minutes.

FAQs

How will it feel?

You'll be seated comfortably, and you won't feel anything from the BSGI scan itself.

How should I prepare?

On the day of the exam, don't use any deodorant, perfume, powders or ointments under your arms or on your breasts.

Wearing a two-part outfit will be more convenient, because then you'll only have to undress from the waist up.
