About Me:

I was born in Hong Kong but grew up in Hillsboro (where my family still lives). I made my rounds around the Hillsboro school district, going at one time or another to Mooberry, Eastwood, Jackson, Evergreen, and Glencoe. I then turned "traitor" and went to college at the University of Washington and got a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology, though I did most of my research in paleontology (dinosaurs!) and fell in love with East Asian and Northern European folklore. After college I spent a year at the Oregon National Primate Research Center and then went to medical school at the University of Virginia and decided to stay a bit longer in Virginia for my residency because I knew once I returned to Oregon that no one was going to pry me away again. I chose to go into family medicine because I enjoyed taking care of the full spectrum, from infants or geriatrics and getting to know patients as a person, not just a diagnosis, and how they feel about it, not just how I want to treat them. I also enjoy working the full scope of medicine from head to toe and working with illness as it affects the whole, not just the organ. I also have much experience from residency working around barriers to care such as cost, coverage, and distance for my patients to ensure they get good care. I plan on in my practice in addition to medicine doing small skin lesion removals, large joint injections (knee, shoulder), and gynecological exams, including IUD placement and removal. While in Virginia I was a member of the AAFP as well as the state Medical Society of Virginia and the local Lynchburg Academy of Medicine. I also enjoyed working in the free clinics in Lynchburg, Charlottesville, and Orange County, Virginia. Outside of medicine my interests include vertebrate paleontology, folklore, children's literature (something I picked up growing up in my mother's home child care), hiking, long cruises along beautiful scenic roads like Highway 101 and basketball. And while I enjoyed my time in Virginia and would not trade it away, after 7 years away from the Pacific Northwest I am happy to be returning to my home and setting up roots here all over again. Hobbies include: Hiking, Basketball, Sightseeing

I believe Dr Chu takes very good care of me. I'm sure it's not necessary to listen to my heart and lungs during my visits but knowing that my heart sounds good and my lungs are clear would be comforting.

I have been waiting months for my appointment. Dr.Chu was wonderful! I was so excited to read my list to him of all my issues. One by one he and I went thru them and discussed a plan of action. I really think he's going to help me have a better quality of life.

Dr Chu and his staff are great and easy to talk to

  Mar 21, 2024
Dr Chu always takes the time to explain what he thinks we need to do to address my healthcare needs. And he likes input from me to insure I understand the direction we are aiming for. He also communicates with my neurologist to make sure any meds prescribed to me are compatible with my anti-seizure meds and stays on course with her healthcare plans. Very caring and puts me at ease knowing that I have a team looking out for the best possible comfort level considering my high maintenance needs. Looking forward to the future and sleep better knowing Dr Chu and the whole team at Legacy St Helens has my back.

All my visits to these clinic are always good and I'm treated always respectfully and expediently

  Feb 15, 2024
He is the most incredible family doctor I've ever encountered. When he walks into the room he wants to know what my concerns are and if I've seen the results of my blood work. We address my concerns, at a very normal pace and in a way that I can actually understand. I can have trouble concentrating for a couple of reasons and have caught him politely pausing at times when I'm having that trouble. I like that he's patient enough to do that. I know he has other people to see. The last part of the exam is when he tells me what is good about the blood work and what might be troubling and offers Solutions and finally asked me what steps I prefer. I really appreciate that I'm included in that final step.
