Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program
A Comprehensive, Well-Balanced Experience
The Legacy Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program is structured to provide a broad base on which to build a strong clinical and surgical experience. Our residents are trained as physicians with full integration of the resident team at a tertiary medical center that includes a busy Level I Trauma Center. Integration with internal medicine students, surgical residents and fellows during non-podiatry focused rotations is emphasized in the Post Graduate Year (PGY)-1. Additional time is concentrated in foot and ankle surgery. Residents rotate through different hospital systems, taking advantage of unique relationships to complete a well-balanced experience, far exceeding the minimum requirements designated by the CPME. PGY-1 Rotations
Anesthesia - Residents become experienced with the peri-operative evaluation of the patient requiring the monitoring of an anesthesiologist. Experience with various medications utilized in the peri-operative management of the surgical patient, obtaining and maintaining intravenous access and airway management are emphasized.
Behavioral Medicine - Residents will develop proficient application of behavioral medicine services including understanding psychological, social, cultural and financial factors that impact the health of patients.
Complex Wound Care & Burn Surgery - Residents learn to evaluate and determine operative and non-operative innovations of the patient with complex wounds.
Emergency Medicine - Residents develop the ability to evaluate patients in the critical care setting with appropriate history and physical to acquire knowledge for consultation to various medical specialties.
General Surgery - Residents learn to evaluate and determine a management plan of the general surgical patient, including a peri-operative management plan, as well as general surgical principles.
Infectious Disease - Concentration on consultation, history and physical taking and appropriate incorporation of the infectious disease specialist in the management of patients with complicated infectious disease.
Internal Medicine - Residents develop a firm understanding of general principles for complete history and physical and medical work-up, including evaluation and management of the general medical patient.
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery - Residents participate in resident-driven clinics with dedicated staff, gaining clinical experience, performing podiatric surgical procedures in various settings and gaining experience rotating through private offices.
Radiology - Residents acquire a general understanding of imaging techniques and interpretation in advanced imaging and plain film radiography.
Vascular Surgery - Residents gain experience in the evaluation of the vascular-compromised patient and understanding of alternatives for treatment. Emphasis is placed on the evaluation and management of the ischemic foot and lower extremities within a general vascular experience.
PGY-2 Rotations
Foot and Ankle Orthopedics - Providing additional clinic and surgical experience to further develop critical thinking skills and knowledge to enhance the resident's understanding and treatment of foot and ankle pathologies.
Geriatric Medicine - Residents gain experience in a specialty that focuses on health care of elderly people, promoting good health by preventing and treating diseases and disabilities in older adults.
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery - Enhancing your experience in the clinical and surgical management of foot and ankle disorders with the added responsibility of providing instruction to junior podiatric residents and students.
Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at Kaiser Foundation facilities - Incorporation of resident involvement, with dedicated staff, in an evidence-based health maintenance organization. Residents gain experience in the full management of the podiatric patient from initial evaluation through discharge in a busy outpatient, inpatient and acute care and traumatized patient setting.
PGY-3 Rotations
Pediatric Orthopedics - Residents participate in a formal rotation evaluating pediatric disorders and managing the injured child.
Advanced Podiatry and Orthopedics - Resident focus on the compete evaluation with attention to initial encounter and management of complex foot and ankle conditions, deformities and injuries in a health maintenance organization setting. Additional experience gained in limb deformity correction and common foot and ankle disorders completes resident training.
Academic meetings
Residents participate in organized bi-weekly meetings designed to provide academic insight to resident experiences, didactic laboratory training, presentation preparation and analysis of literature,inlcuding:
- Weekly Resident Lecture Series - Resident-assigned presentation topics given weekly to an organized group designed to aid residents in the preparation and delivery of information in an academic environment.
- Weekly Chapter Review - Textbook chapters are broken down and reviewed on a weekly basis. Designed to maintain the fundamentals of education and explore varying concepts of foot and ankle surgery.
- Journal Club - Monthly meetings with community attendings and residents to review the current literature for the foot and ankle physician, while developing skills in critical analysis and increasing knowledge base.
- Case Presentation and Discussion - Monthly organized discussion of interesting cases presented by residents and active attending physicians in an academic setting.
- Cadaveric Dissection Laboratory - Monthly cadaveric dissection in the laboratory environment with formal didactic instruction of procedures and equipment.
- Visiting Clinician Lecture Series - Monthly organized visiting clinician lecture series focused from the expertise of local leaders in the field. Lectures encompass specialties from all aspects of the medical management team.
Other program highlights
Community involvement - Our residents and attending podiatrists are committed to community involvement. Participation in various nonprofit wellness forums are encouraged throughout the year.
State and national conference participation - Residents attend and participate as presenters at the Oregon Podiatric Medical Association Biannual Scientific Seminars and as manuscript and poster presenters at the annual American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and Scientific Seminar. Institutional support is provided to those residents who participate.
Externship Opportunity - The Legacy Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Residency Program participates in a monthly externship program not formally associated with any school of podiatry. Four qualified students are selected each month (June-December) to participate with our residents. The externship is designed to provide visiting students exposure to the culture of the program and expand experience in the profession of podiatry.
