Glaucoma is a disease of the optic nerve, often caused by high pressure inside the eye. It is a silent disease, causing ongoing damage without any pain or blurring until very late in the disease. With advanced glaucoma, people can develop blind spots, tunnel vision or even complete blindness. The loss of vision is permanent.
However, with an early diagnosis and proper treatment, glaucoma is often preventable. We can treat all types of glaucoma and provide many treatment options, including medications, laser treatment and surgery.
Legacy Devers Eye Institute is a world center for research in the prevention and treatment of glaucoma and features experts in glaucoma treatment. The Thelma and Gilbert Schnitzer Comprehensive Glaucoma Center was established in 2007 through a generous gift from the Schnitzer/Novack Foundation to unite glaucoma clinical care and research.
