Robotic Hip and Knee Surgeries
More precision, quicker recovery
Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip are common joint diseases in which joint cartilage breaks down. When cartilage breaks down and wears away, the pain can lead to decreased quality of life.
At Legacy Health, you may have the option of robotics-assisted technology, performed using a highly advanced robotic system that is controlled by the surgeon. Because this procedure is much less invasive than traditional surgery, you will likely have a shorter hospital stay, faster healing time and a speedy return to your normal lifestyle.
Legacy is a leader in robotics-assisted knee and hip replacement. We have introduced several robotic procedures to the region.

For knees
For knees, robotics-assisted surgery offers many benefits. It allows the surgeon to remove less bone and precisely place the implant, resulting in a more natural-feeling knee. Other benefits:
- Less wear on the implant
- Smaller incision for less scarring
- Less pain, faster recovery and shorter hospital stay than traditional knee replacement surgery
- Reduced blood loss
First in the area with this new technology
Partial knee replacement
An option to repair your knee is called “partial knee resurfacing.” In this surgery, the surgeon uses a robotic arm to resurface only the diseased portion of the knee joint, sparing your healthy bone and surrounding tissue. An implant is then secured in the joint to allow the knee to move smoothly again.
For hips
For hips, robotics-assisted surgery offers many benefits. It allows the surgeon to remove less bone and precisely place the implant, resulting in a more natural-feeling hip. Other benefits:
- Less wear on the implant
- Smaller incision for less scarring
- Less pain, faster recovery and shorter hospital stay than traditional hip replacement surgery
- Reduced blood loss
An innovator in robotics technology
Robotic-assisted total hip replacement is a treatment option for people suffering with either non-inflammatory or inflammatory degenerative joint disease, and allows for more surgical precision. Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center was the first hospital in the Portland-Salem-Vancouver area to offer a robotic-assisted total hip replacement option.
The goal of using robotic-arm technology to perform hip replacement is for precision in surgery. Accurate placement and alignment of implant components are critical in hip replacement. Benefits:
- Accurate placement of your hip implant using the surgeon-controlled robotic arm system, which can reduce the likelihood of hip dislocation
- More consistency in leg length, potentially decreasing the need for a shoe lift
- Decreased risk of the implant and bone abnormally rubbing together — this may improve the lifetime of the implant
