Our classes are held here at Legacy Emanuels campus. The courses are directed and instructed by our local Trauma Surgeons as well as a variety of Emergency Physicians both local and rural.

ATLS at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center

The Advanced Trauma Life Support® (ATLS®) program can teach you a systematic, concise approach to the care of a trauma patient. ATLS was developed by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma (COT) and was first introduced in the US and abroad in 1980. Its courses provide you with a safe and reliable method for immediate management of injured patients. The course teaches you how to assess a patient’s condition, resuscitate, stabilize, and determine if needs exceed a facility’s capacity. It also covers how to arrange for a patient’s inter-hospital transfer and assure that optimum care is provided throughout the process. If you don’t treat trauma patients frequently, an ATLS course provides an easy method to remember for evaluation and treatment of a trauma victim.

ATCN at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center

Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN) is an advanced course designed for the registered nurse interested in increasing his/her knowledge in management of the multiple trauma patient. The ATCN course is taught concurrently with ATLS. The ATCN program has been operational for more than 25 years and has an excellent record of offering a superb trauma educational program and maintaining a positive collaboration with the ACS Committee on Trauma State Chapters. The ATCN program is currently being offered in numerous states as well as internationally.

The ATCN student attends ATLS lectures with physicians with break-out sessions for skills stations to focus on nursing care. This unique teaching experience creates an opportunity for Licensed Independent Practitioners and Registered Nurses to share a common language and approach to the care of the trauma patient. ATCN skills stations include

  • Initial Assessment and Management
  • Airway and Ventilatory Management
  • Hemorrhagic Shock
  • Musculoskeletal and Spinal Trauma
  • Head Trauma
  • Pediatric Trauma

For more information about ATCN please visit https://www.atcnnurses.org/

Legacy Emanuel Medical Center is the only Trauma Center in the state of Oregon, and one of only 3 centers in the Pacific Northwest, to offer this advanced education course. Our course directors and faculty include specialty trained Trauma Resuscitation Nurses with significant experience in caring for the critically ill trauma patient.

RTTDC at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center

Developed by the Rural Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma (ACS COT), Rural Trauma Team Development Course (RTTDC) is based on the concept that in most situations, rural facilities can form a trauma team consisting of at least three core members. The RTTDC emphasizes a team approach to the initial evaluation and resuscitation of the trauma patient at a rural facility. The course assists health care professionals in determining the need to transfer the patient to a higher level of care. The course includes interactive lectures on medical procedures and communication strategies as well as three team-performance scenarios.
