The trauma service maintains year-round senior resident staffing by utilizing surgical residents from Oregon Health Sciences University, Madigan Army Medical Center, and Samaritan Health Services. In addition, OHSU surgical residents rotate onto the Legacy Trauma Service during their PGY-2 year. The PGY-2 rotation is primarily an ICU rotation, they can be involved with trauma resuscitation and operative cases. The PGY-4 rotation is focused primarily on the evaluation, resuscitation and management of trauma and acute care surgery patients, although they are also based in the ICU. Every Thursday morning, the resident staff present at a trauma admissions conference and can attend general surgery morbidity and mortality conference on Friday mornings. Both involve a case review and discussion and review of literature. Residents are encouraged to participate in research and publication. The trauma service follows all ACGME guidelines regarding work hours. Graduate Medical Education oversees all visiting residents, medical and PA students. Trainees are only accepted from programs accredited by ACGME, AOA or other accrediting organization for their academic study (i.e., LCME, AOA, ARC-PA) GME requires institutional agreements with training programs be in place prior to the start of the rotation. Preceptors are credentialed medical staff members.

Legacy Trauma Services is an active partner in education with pre-hospital providers. Legacy Medical Center is the area provider of the Critical Care Emergency Management Course. Other educational offerings include:

• Rural Trauma Team Development Courses

• Skills days throughout the state

• Participants in statewide EMS conferences as speakers and lecturers.  

• Virtual and Live seminars on clinically relevant trauma topics
